Natural Hazards Case Study List

This is a recommended list for the Natural Hazards module

Global distribution of natural Hazards, e.g. where do they occur.
Make sure you know where the following hazards occur around the world,

Floods
Earthquakes
Volcanic Eruptions
Tropical Storms
Droughts

Physical processes of natural hazards e.g. why do they happen
Make sure you know the causes of the following hazards,

Volcanic Eruptions
Earthquakes
Tropical Storms
Floods
Droughts (it is worth reading the pages in the text book)

Effects on people
Make sure that you know the following case studies. For each one ask the following questions: -

  • Why did it happened?
  • What effects did it have on people?
  • How do these effects vary between MEDC's and LEDCs?
  • How do people protect themselves from this hazard?
  • Can the hazard be predicted or controlled?
